Purpose and objective of the contract:
As a first step, a feasibility study was conducted for several energy-efficiency improvements to the heating and electrical systems at the Arcimboldi Theater in Milan, with the aim of applying for the PNRR grant program to promote eco-efficiency and reduce energy consumption in theaters and movie theaters.
The project included conducting an energy audit and quantifying the achievable energy savings.
Thanks to the project it submitted, the theater won the grant competition for European funding; as a result, the final and detailed design plans for the proposed work were completed, paving the way for their implementation.
Following the completion of the projects, a post-implementation assessment was conducted to report on the work carried out and the actual achievement of the savings targets.

Description of activities:
The energy retrofit project included the following measures to improve the energy efficiency of the heating systems:
- Replacement of the refrigeration unit with a capacity of 1,899 kW and installation of inverters on the evaporative tower fan motors;
- Installation of 11 inverters on the same number of circulator motors serving the winter and summer air conditioning systems;
- Upgrade of the air handling units serving the Arcimboldi Theater in Milan, through the installation of:
- Heat recovery units with coupled heat exchangers for two AHUs;
- Static cross-flow heat recovery unit for an air handling unit;
- Inverters on the fan motors of 7 AHU units
- Installation of a motorized system to open the driveway entrance in the area behind the stage and restoration of the air curtains;
- Revamping of the theater’s HVAC monitoring system by migrating the current monitoring platform to a newer, more up-to-date version and replacing the existing components.
The completed project included the following energy-efficiency improvements to the electrical systems:
- Energy retrofitof the lighting system at the Arcimboldi Theater in Milan, through the installation of approximately 4,500 lamps;
- Installation of a 30 kWp photovoltaic system on the theater’s roof.
