Over the past 10 years, research has focused on materials that enable passive daytime radiative cooling, leading to the development of several prototypes; however, large-scale commercial adoption remains limited.

It is worth noting that materials that are highly emissive and capable of cooling throughradiative emission have existed for a long time.

As early as the 1970s , research was conducted on traditional RC (Radiative Cooling) materials , primarily polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyphenylene oxide (PPO); the limitation of these materials is that they could cool only under certain conditions, and when exposed to direct light, this effect did not persist because their low reflectance values caused the the net radiation from the sun was far greater thanthe emissivity.

Essentially, these materials were unable to achieve a reflectance high enough to reflect sunlight and cool down even when exposed to the sun.

The revolutionary breakthrough achieved in 2014 by the Stanford team was demonstrating the possibility of daytime radiative cooling using materials that combined the two desired characteristics: high emissivity in the LWIR band (Long-Wave Infrared, i.e., 8–13 µm) and extremely high solar reflectance.

However, performance depends heavily on local weather conditions: in very humid or cloudy environments, the effect is significantly reduced, since water vapor in the atmosphere absorbs some of the infrared radiation that would otherwise reach space.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” id=”3″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” gradient_type=”default” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]

How does radiative exchange with space occur?

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Cooling is possible because radiative exchange occurs between the Earth, which is at room temperature (about 300 K), and space (about 3 K).
